Before 22,383 spectators the match began at a lively pace, and within six minutes we were ahead. Southren robbed Beech, whipped in a quick cross, and Dixon drove a left‑footer in off the post from 15 yards. Swansea, aided by a strong wind, levelled four minutes later when Griffiths’ long cross from the left sailed into the far top corner beyond Gregory’s fingertips. The goal lifted the Swans, but as the half wore on our control grew, and in the 26th minute Southren again supplied the ammunition - an outward‑curling centre met by Dixon’s decisive header from six yards to restore the lead.
Ten minutes after the restart Sexton pounced in a goalmouth scramble to make it 3–1, effectively settling the contest. Swansea’s troubles deepened when Pearson was carried off on 62 minutes - thankfully not a broken leg, though he faces a lengthy lay‑off. Almost immediately their defence faltered again, a mis‑headed clearance dropping kindly for Dixon to complete his hat‑trick with the simplest of finishes.
We pressed relentlessly thereafter and might have added more but for several remarkable escapes by the visitors. At the other end Allchurch was kept firmly in check by Derek Parker, ensuring Swansea never mounted a serious revival.
In all, it was a commanding display, crowned by Tommy Dixon’s well‑earned match ball - a fitting reward for a hat‑trick that highlighted an excellent team performance
