1946-47 Football Combination (Section B)

As the majority of its members now drawn from outside the capital with the inclusion of teams from as far afield as Bristol, Swansea and Bournemouth. This re-modelled Combination was the achievement of West Ham United chairman, Mr. W.J. Cearns, and the enthusiasm with which the project was acclaimed may be guaged by the number of clubs who applied for membership to the competition.

The leagues title was changed from the 'London Combination' to the 'Football Combination' and split into two sections 'A' and 'B'.

Congratulations to our Combination team on the smart win over the Pensioners' Reserves. On paper, Chelsea looked an imposing array of talent, several of them being seasoned First XI players. However, our lads set about their job with spirit not to be denied, and the final score in no way flattered them.

Highbury crackled with Monday‑night energy as West Ham United and Crystal Palace squared up in the London Challenge Cup Final, neutral ground doing nothing to dull the edge of local rivalry. The Hammers struck first blood - Terry Woodgate finishing a slick move - and Dick Dunn’s sharp drive on the stroke of half‑time sent them in with a commanding lead.

West Ham looked to have killed the contest moments after the restart when Dunn pounced again, his second of the night stretching the advantage to 3–0. But Palace weren’t done. Kurz coolly converted from the spot, and when Robson drilled in a second, the tide suddenly swung and the South Londoners came roaring back.

The finale was frantic, Palace throwing everything forward, but West Ham held their nerve, absorbed the pressure, and saw out a breathless 3–2 win to lift the Cup.

Those hardy souls who braved the bleak, rain‑lashed afternoon were rewarded with a contest as wild as the weather. The pitch grew heavier with every minute, yet we adapted superbly and looked to be coasting when a 4–1 lead was carved out.

That comfort vanished in an instant. Jack Yeomanson - only in his second outing in claret and blue - was forced off injured, leaving us to slog through the mud with ten men. Coventry sensed weakness and surged forward relentlessly, hauling themselves level as the storm worsened and the pressure tightened.

Then came the moment that threatened to undo everything: a Coventry penalty, three minutes from time, their chance to complete the comeback. But Gordon Harvey stood tall, guessed right, and pulled off a magnificent save to preserve a precious point.

It capped an afternoon dominated by spot‑kicks. George Proudlock had already buried two of ours, while debutant J. Jordon announced himself with a pair of well‑taken goals.

A chaotic, rain‑soaked scrap - full of grit, setbacks, and no shortage of character.

NO PROGRAMME ISSUED

The game against Millwall was originally scheduled for 8th February but was postponed in favour of the First team game against Newport County as the original date for that fixture was scheduled for 14 December was postponed because of Fog.

The Charlton game before this one was Postponed, it's most likely the printers thought this game 5 days later wouldn't take place (hence perhaps No programme !).
