Tired out after travelling nearly 700 miles in three days but happy because one of their friends had realised his greatest ambition in joining West Ham United, a little party of pit workers returned to their humble homes in South Yorkshire late last night. Members of Frickley Colliery Soccer side, they'd taken a day off from the mines to come and play against West Ham at Upton Park. Lost the game 5-0, but departed very cheerfully for the North, made richer by a substantial cheque given them by United for the transfer of their outside left, twenty-two-year-old Reginald Gore. He joined Frickley this season, was previously at Southport and Chesterfield, will probably be included in the West Ham reserve teams for the Easter programme. This colliery team, one of the most famous "nurseries" in the country, is supported by a levy from the pit-workers, men paying 2d. a week and lads a penny. Thus is paid the wage-bill of £20. One of the most impressive displays was given by Austin Collier, dark well-built left back. Collier is famed as the Iron Man of the side, the player who never gets hurt. Said one of his colleagues, " He goes into it so much he gets some terrible knocks, but like a miracle always seems to come up fit and smiling."

East Ham defeat by Ilford Boys in the second round of the Corinthian Shield on West Ham's ground, was a tale of missed chances by the home team, whose forwards disappointed sadly after their good showing in their two previous games this season. Although not quite so impressive all-round as their conquerors, the "East" had numerous fine openings in the second half, but the knowledge that they were two down seemed to be too much for them, and their shooting was woefully lacking in direction and force. Ilford had fewer actual chances, but they were always the more dangerous-looking team near goal, and their plan of campaign, taken all round, was more impressive than East Ham's. In the opening half, when they scored the two vital goals. Ilford were much quicker on the ball, better together, and altogether more purposeful than the home lads, who, with two easy victories behind them, seemed a little bewildered by the dash of their opponents.

Game to the end, Hackney Boys made a great fight in their 3rd round English Shield tie with West Ham's representatives on the Boleyn Ground. The muddy conditions hampered the Hackney contingent in no small manner, and although they held the local boys to one goal at half-time, their efforts to stop the lively Hammers' forwards were of no avail.  Gibbs was outstanding for West Ham; he wandered around the visitors' penalty area and besides hitting the rigging and woodwork on numerous occasions he put three "first-timers" past plucky Tucker.
Hackney were on top in the opening minutes and must have gone ahead but for some smart saves by Shirley. This stylish ‘keeper certainly had some claims to those representatives honours which are due shortly.
Although still a little goal-shy, Applebee has the makings of a scoring centre-forward – his goal, the second for West ham, was the result of clever anticipation. With the North London defence spread-eagled Gibbs picked up a loose ball and shot from the area to give West Ham the lead. Dogged defence work kept the Hammers’ forwards at bay and half-time came with only one goal between the teams.
From the resumption Tucker was subjected to a bombardment and Applebee netted the homesters’ second. Gibbs made the next goal for Porley. Taking a long ball he made way up field to pass squarely to the inside-left who made no mistake from five yards. Ten minutes from the end West Ham played well to upset the Hackney defence, and Gibbs completed his hat-trick

Although they lost by one goal to none. Worthing Boys came out of their encounter with West Ham with colours flying. They played a magnificent defensive game and a fact which must have pleased their masters more than anything — they kept their heads right until the last kick. The Worthing linesman's statement that four minutes overtime were played. although only one minute was taken off for stoppages, was corroborated by one or two spectators. According to this the winning goal was scored at least two minutes after full-time, but the point is hardly worth labouring for I doubt if Worthing Boys could have repeated their display if West Ham had been forced to play at Worthing.

Hackney won the toss and play began with the wind in their favour. West Ham were soon pressing hard, and nearly had a goal from a clever movement by French and Eve on the right wing. After 15 minutes West Ham lost their advantage, and the play swung rapidly backwards and forwards. Webber, at centre-half was a tower of strength for West Ham and he had bad luck when a powerful shot from him hit the crossbar. The first goal of the match was scored for West Ham when French passed to Sawkins, centre-forward who in turn passed to Copeland at left outside, who netted with a well-placed shot.
Hackney's goal was scored by Russell as a result of clever combination by the forwards. The deciding goal came when Jones V. headed into his own net, just when a draw looked certain, the gift goal came when the hackney centre-half was trying to clear Webber's long shot that had rebounded from the cross-bar.
