A Pictorial History
1933-34 Football League Second Division
Manager: Charlie Paynter

After two disastrous campaigns the Hammers were looking to improve and they began the season well. Bolton Wanderers were beaten at home 4–2 on the opening day of the season and then came an exciting 4–4 draw at Plymouth Argyle. Away from home there were two 4–1 reverses at Brentford and Oldham Athletic, but at home the goals flowed. Vic Watson was back on form, scoring two in the 5–1 victory over Plymouth and a hat-trick as Preston North End were crushed 6–0 at the Boleyn Ground. Following a creditable 2–2 draw with Millwall at the Den, Vic Watson did it again with another hat-trick in the 4–1 defeat of Lincoln City. The Christmas period brought two 1–1 draws with Swansea Town and the Hammers ended the year losing 5–1 at Bolton Wanderers.
A home tie in the FA Cup brought a 3–2 win against Bradford City but in the next round at Tottenham the Hammers crashed out 4–1. There were four successive defeats before the biggest crowd of the season, 24,335, turned up at the Boleyn to see local rivals Millwall gain a point in the 1–1 draw. Twenty-year-old Ted Fenton had been drafted into the side at centre-forward and he responded with a hat-trick in the 3–1 home win over Bury. Two weeks later at Easter he was scoring the winner at Old Trafford as the Hammers triumphed 1–0, and the following day the London derby with Fulham was won 5–1, with Watson scoring three. The season ended with narrow wins against Port Vale and Nott County, which resulted in a final placing of seventh in the table.

The fortunes of war were not kind to Bolton. During the opening half, when a butterfly sailed over the pitch its way to the nearest cabbage, Griffiths illustrated one of the definite tragedies of life by putting through his own goal and McKay missed a penalty when he hit the post. But for those two mistakes Bolton might have shared the points and started their new Second League career in better heart. I think West Ham won because Victor Watson was in more immediate touch with his colleagues than Milsom. In the second half Bolton's tall and supple leader played to a large extent. into the hands of Barrett, who from first to last made his portly self a third back. Though in a cohesive sense It is impossible to rave about the virtues of defence on either side, I would take Barrett and then Church as the leading figures. In the absence of Collins It was Barrett who redeemed the moderate quality of his immediate colleagues. Thorpe, Anderson and Robson are new men who need time to ripen acquaintance; but it is safe to predict that the return of Chalkley to the back division cannot long be delayed. There was much to admire in West Ham's attack. I do not suggest that Morton and Leonard Goulden, the old Leyton amateur, played a more artistic game than did Cook and Westwood on the other side; but the home pair shot with more accuracy, and the mercurial Morton, little and wise and bursting with youthful vigour, seems destined for another good season. The other pair drooped on a broken wing. Landells, the old Millwall man, who used to play alongside Jack Cock, hurt the back of his thigh at an early stage. On and off during this match he went outside, and so Tippett will need another match before he can prove his real worth. From What he did on Saturday in front of a crowd that bordered on 26.000. I think Tippett is entitled to an extensive trial.

Offside tactics employed against West Ham, at Upton Park, were far from successful in the early stages, and the visitors' goal escaped narrowly on several occasions. Against the good play of the home halfbacks, the City forwards, whose passing proved poor, were quite unable to make headway, and about 20,000 spectators saw Watson place West Ham ahead after 15 minutes. The home forwards, with Morton and Watson outstanding, found no difficulty in eluding the offside trap, and following a prolonged spell of pressure and many corner kicks, Landells increased the lead after 26 minutes. Showing much better combination, Hull gave an improved display in the second half, and for a long spell enjoyed the balance of some interesting, if rather scrappy exchanges. While at times clever in other respects, however, the City forwards finished far from well, and West Ham remained the more dangerous side, despite the fact that Watson lost two or three good chances. Hull, however, reduced their arrears after 26 minutes through Hubbard. West Ham failed to reproduce their fine form of the first half, but thoroughly deserved their victory all the same.

With the least bit of luck Bradford City would have forced a replay in this game at Upton Park, the first time the two teams have met in the Cup. But the Hammers must get full credit for their victory, the play of their full backs, Walker and Chalkley, being much sounder than that of the visiting pair. Because of these two stumbling blocks the visitors, though often developing first-rate movements in which their wingers, Ormandy and Watmough, were largely to the fore, found it difficult to get in shots. Watson again took a prominent part in a West Ham success. Throughout the game he was quick to take his chances and, despite the close watching of his opponents, he got in many skilful shots. The game began strongly in favour of Bradford City, but in less than ten minutes some clever passing between Cockroft, Tippett and Morton led to Goulden scoring a fine goal with his left foot. The second goal came from a perfect centre by Ruffell, which Watson converted with a downward header. Almost immediately Watmough penetrated the Hammers' defence, and after Spence kicked against the foot of an upright Hallows turned the ball through. The readiness to shoot on the part of both sets of forwards kept the goalkeepers busy, and both Warhurst, in the City goal, and Rutherford, for the Hammers, had to get the ball away under great difficulty. Watson, resisting a tackle by Bignell, increased West Ham's lead early in the second half. But again the City responded quickly, for when Rutherford failed to intercept a high centre from Ormandy Spence headed through. For the rest of the game the visitors were slightly the more dangerous, but sure kicking, especially by Walker, frustrated their efforts to score.

West Ham United gave one of their most disappointing displays of the season at Upton Park, and were outplayed in the first half at all points by a faster, cleverer and better balanced side. Reid without ever appearing to do over-much, led the Oldham line with skill and dash, while Pears, on the left wing, with speed and ball control always seemed likely to win the game for them. Oldham should have scored in the first few minutes when Reid, racing through the home defence, lost control of the ball and shot weakly, but ten minutes later Pears scored, only for Watson to equalise almost immediately afterwards. In the second half West Ham did enough pressing to have scored several times, but Oldham got three more goals in sharp breakaways through Reid with two and Pears.

Bury the cleverer set of footballers dominated the opening half of the game at Upton Park. Both sides missed some easy chances through weakness in front of goal. Tremelling, the Bury goalkeeper, saved cleverly from Fenton and Wood early on, but after a quarter of an hour Bury took command and on several occasions the home goal was in jeopardy. Morton was outstanding in a hard game. Fenton scored for West Ham after 40 minutes. Bury seemed to tire on resuming and two more snap goals by Fenton settled the issued. Fenton proved a brilliant deputy for Watson, and Wood, Morton and Goulden were smart forwards. Barrett gave Vernon no scope, and Chalkley kicked brilliantly in covering Rutherford, who saved a penalty by Vernon. Bury never gave up trying, but finished well beaten by superior rivals. Eggleton scored for Bury near the end.
