1933-34 Football League Second Division

Manager: Charlie Paynter

After two disastrous campaigns the Hammers were looking to improve and they began the season well. Bolton Wanderers were beaten at home 4–2 on the opening day of the season and then came an exciting 4–4 draw at Plymouth Argyle. Away from home there were two 4–1 reverses at Brentford and Oldham Athletic, but at home the goals flowed. Vic Watson was back on form, scoring two in the 5–1 victory over Plymouth and a hat-trick as Preston North End were crushed 6–0 at the Boleyn Ground. Following a creditable 2–2 draw with Millwall at the Den, Vic Watson did it again with another hat-trick in the 4–1 defeat of Lincoln City. The Christmas period brought two 1–1 draws with Swansea Town and the Hammers ended the year losing 5–1 at Bolton Wanderers.

A home tie in the FA Cup brought a 3–2 win against Bradford City but in the next round at Tottenham the Hammers crashed out 4–1. There were four successive defeats before the biggest crowd of the season, 24,335, turned up at the Boleyn to see local rivals Millwall gain a point in the 1–1 draw. Twenty-year-old Ted Fenton had been drafted into the side at centre-forward and he responded with a hat-trick in the 3–1 home win over Bury. Two weeks later at Easter he was scoring the winner at Old Trafford as the Hammers triumphed 1–0, and the following day the London derby with Fulham was won 5–1, with Watson scoring three. The season ended with narrow wins against Port Vale and Nott County, which resulted in a final placing of seventh in the table.

The fortunes of war were unkind to Bolton. In a first half so quiet that a butterfly could drift across the pitch in search of the nearest cabbage, Griffiths supplied one of football’s small tragedies by turning the ball into his own net, and McKay compounded it by striking the post from the penalty spot. Without those two mishaps Bolton might well have shared the points and begun their Second Division life in far better spirits.
West Ham, though, had the sharper edge. Victor Watson was in far closer harmony with his colleagues than Milsom, and after the interval Bolton’s tall, supple leader drifted repeatedly into the grasp of Barrett — who, portly and implacable, played as though he were a third back from first whistle to last. Neither defence truly convinced, but Barrett stood out as the dominant figure, with Church next in line. In Collins’s absence it was Barrett who held together a back line still finding its bearings. Thorpe, Anderson and Robson are newcomers who need time to settle, and it seems inevitable that Chalkley’s return to the rear-guard will not be long delayed.
There was much to admire in West Ham’s attack. Morton and Leonard Goulden, the former Leyton amateur, were no more artistic than Cook and Westwood, but they shot straighter, and the mercurial Morton - small, shrewd and bursting with youthful energy - looks set for another fine season. The other wing, however, faltered. Landells, the ex‑Millwall man who once partnered Jack Cock, injured the back of his thigh early on and drifted in and out thereafter. Tippett, therefore, had little chance to show his true worth, but from what he managed before a crowd touching 26,000, he surely merits a longer trial.

Offside tactics were no friend to Hull at Upton Park. In the early stages they failed completely, and the visitors’ goal survived several narrow escapes. West Ham’s half‑backs were in commanding form, and with City’s forwards passing poorly, the visitors could make no headway. After fifteen minutes Watson put West Ham in front, to the delight of the 20,000 watching on.
The home forwards - Morton and Watson especially - slipped the offside trap with ease, and after a long spell of pressure and a flurry of corners, Landells drove home a second after twenty‑six minutes. Hull returned after the interval with far better combination and enjoyed the upper hand during a long, if scrappy, passage of play. Yet for all their neat touches, the City forwards finished weakly, while West Ham remained the more dangerous side, even with Watson wasting two or three inviting chances.
Hull finally reduced the arrears through Hubbard, also after twenty‑six minutes, but West Ham, though unable to recapture their first‑half sparkle, were still worthy winners.

With a shade more luck Bradford City would have earned a replay in their first‑ever Cup meeting with West Ham at Upton Park. But the Hammers fully deserved their win, their full‑backs Walker and Chalkley proving far sounder than the visiting pair. Against those two barriers the City forwards — despite several promising moves led by wingers Ormandy and Watmough - struggled to get in clean shots.
Watson again played a leading role in a West Ham victory. Quick to seize every half‑chance and closely shadowed throughout, he still managed a stream of clever efforts on goal. City began strongly, but inside ten minutes neat interplay between Cockroft, Tippett and Morton opened the way for Goulden to drive home a fine left‑footer. The second followed soon after: a perfect centre from Ruffell, and Watson headed down and in.
Bradford hit back almost at once. Watmough broke through, Spence struck the upright, and Hallows forced the rebound over the line. With both forward lines eager to shoot, the goalkeepers were kept fully occupied; Warhurst and Rutherford each had to clear under heavy pressure.
Early in the second half Watson brushed off a tackle from Bignell to restore West Ham’s two‑goal cushion. Again City replied swiftly: Rutherford failed to reach a high centre from Ormandy, and Spence headed home. For the remainder Bradford were the more threatening side, but Walker’s sure kicking repeatedly broke up their attacks, and West Ham held firm for a merited win.

West Ham were beaten at Preston by three goals to one, and the margin would have been heavier but for the splendid work of the defence. Preston’s forwards, playing bright, confident football, dominated the early stages, and the Hammers’ goal survived several narrow escapes - Milne striking an upright and Dougal rattling the crossbar. For all West Ham’s resistance, they could not prevent Preston scoring twice before the interval, Palethorpe claiming both.
After the break West Ham improved in attack, with Watson proving a constant nuisance to the home defence. He could not find a goal himself, but midway through the half a neat pass from him allowed Cliff Ette, the Park Royal amateur, to turn the ball into the net. Chances, however, remained scarce for the Hammers’ forwards.
Preston later restored their two‑goal lead when Stephenson forced the ball home in a scramble, Rutherford having strayed from his line. It was a deserved victory for the home side, and West Ham’s defenders could take most credit for keeping the score respectable.

West Ham United produced one of their most disappointing displays of the season at Upton Park, and in the first half were outplayed in every department by a faster, neater and better‑balanced Oldham side. Reid, without ever seeming to exert himself unduly, led the visitors’ line with dash and intelligence, while Pears on the left, quick and assured on the ball, looked capable of winning the match almost single‑handedly.
Oldham should have scored within minutes when Reid burst through the home defence only to lose control and finish weakly, but ten minutes later Pears made no mistake. Watson levelled almost immediately, yet the equaliser did little to lift West Ham’s general play.
After the interval the Hammers pressed hard enough to have scored several times, but Oldham struck the decisive blows on sharp breakaways - Reid twice more, and Pears again - punishing West Ham’s looseness at the back. For all their late pressure, the home side never truly recovered from their wretched first half.

Bury the cleverer set of footballers dominated the opening half of the game at Upton Park. Both sides missed some easy chances through weakness in front of goal. Tremelling, the Bury goalkeeper, saved cleverly from Fenton and Wood early on, but after a quarter of an hour Bury took command and on several occasions the home goal was in jeopardy. Morton was outstanding in a hard game. Fenton scored for West Ham after 40 minutes. Bury seemed to tire on resuming and two more snap goals by Fenton settled the issued. Fenton proved a brilliant deputy for Watson, and Wood, Morton and Goulden were smart forwards. Barrett gave Vernon no scope, and Chalkley kicked brilliantly in covering Rutherford, who saved a penalty by Vernon. Bury never gave up trying, but finished well beaten by superior rivals. Eggleton scored for Bury near the end.
