The result of this game at the Valley was decided by the craft and shooting ability of H. Mills, West Ham's centre-forward. The young Scottish professional got a hat-trick after Walkers' first goal had given West Ham an early lead, and created quite a good impression in a line where his brother played at inside-right. Charlton's goals ea

West Ham have made considerable progress in the london Combination since they relegated several of their recognised League team to the reserves. They gained a point from their game with Brentford and are now third in the table. Play was not very interesting, this can be attributed to the fact that neither side was able to settle down owing to the fact that the refereee made himself unnecessarily prominent. Stoppage, for trifle things, were all too common. It would have been an injustice for either team to have lost, but there is no doubt that West Ham would have taken full points but for poor goalkeeping by Dixon. Goals by Wood and Mill G., enabled West Ham to hold what should have been a winning advatage at the interval. Berry narrowed the nargin and then Compton eqaulised. Dixon being at fault. Ware intercepted a shot from Ruffell and had the misfortune to turn the ball into his own goal, but not long after another lapse by the West Ham goalkeeper gave Crompton the simplest of chances which he was quick to accept. St Pier was an outstanding player for West Ham who inclded Hormill, a gunner from Woolwich Artillery. He adapted himself very well.

West Ham won with plenty to spare. They made many glaring blunders near goal the early stages, however, that they almost deserved to lose. They should have had the game good won before the interval, but repeatedly Mills who was very erratic at centre-forward, shot wide when unmarked and with only Nash, the Palace keeper to beat He was not the only offender in this respect, and significant of the poor marksmanship of both sets of forwards that the beat shot of the first half was sent by Rivers, the Palace left-half, who hit the bar with great drive. It was left Deacon, who schemed cleverly inside-left set West Ham the road to victory which he did with a brilliant solo effort. Beating three men, he worked his way close in and shot into the corner of the net. There was a very different tale to tell in the second half when West Ham made amends for their early lapses. The forwards dallied less and made rings round the disjointed Palace defence, scoring three good goals. Ruffell who was the cleverest forward on the field, beat Nash with a splendidly placed first-time drive after Wood, on the opposite wing, had cleverly drawn the backs out of position and sent the ball across the field, where Ruffell was waiting to seize the opportunity. This was the best goal and movement of the afternoon. Deacon and Mills quickly obtained two more goals, but by this time the Palace had gone to pieces. The football generally was very scrappy.
