A Pictorial History
1939-40 Regional League South 'A'
Football resumed in a modified format, with West Ham competing in the regional League South, where they performed well, finishing second in both League A (which ended in February 1940) and League C (which ran until June 1940).
The Hammers also participated in the Football League War Cup, a knockout competition introduced to replace the FA Cup. They defeated Chelsea, Leicester City, Huddersfield Town, and Birmingham before securing a thrilling 4-3 semi-final victory over Fulham. In the final, played at Wembley Stadium on 8 June 1940, Sam Small scored the only goal of the match, leading West Ham to a 1-0 win over Blackburn Rovers and their first major silverware. The victory was a morale booster for East Londoners, who were already facing the threat of Nazi air raids.
Despite the challenges of wartime football, West Ham continued to perform well in subsequent seasons, adapting to the ever-changing league structures and player availability. It was a turbulent but historic period for the club.

In being the first team to beat Arsenal in the Football League Regional Competition, at Upton Park, West Ham can claim to have well and truly deserved their victory. They were superior in all departments of the game, and especially at forward, where they showed much more thrust and finish than the Arsenal men. The latter were inclined to "fiddle" too much with the ball on the frozen turf, and their attacks consistently broke down against the home defence, in which Walker (C.), Walker (R.) and Bicknell played very soundly. Indeed, so lacking in initiative in front of goal were the Arsenal attackers, that Conway had a comparatively quiet afternoon in goal.
The Hammers' forwards were much more virile and, besides displaying good control of ball, were always ready to shoot. They missed a number of chances, and easy ones at that, but these lapses could be forgiven on a ground on which the ball often jumped awkwardly at the crucial moment. Foreman, as the leader of the home attack, was a dangerous raider, but it was the enterprise of Fenton, at inside right, that made the line such a vital force. His dash in taking the ball through and good judgment in passing were of great value, and Foreman had another good worker on the other side of him in Curtis, who, although he has been assisting the Hammers regularly recently, is an Arsenal player.
West Ham's forwards were able to pull out that little extra speed in attack that made all the difference when an opening presented itself, and their first goal after six minutes came as the result of a quick dash by Foreman, and a clever piece of anticipation by Barrett. Having secured the ball on the edge of the penalty area, the centre-forward back heeled it as Barrett dashed forward, and with a mighty shot the latter crashed it into the net. The Hammers secured their second goal 20 minutes after the interval, when all the forwards took part in the attack, and three minutes from the end the spectators were treated to another excellent piece of play that led to the third goal.
