Carreras Ltd., one of the most distinctive names in Britain’s tobacco trade, emerged from the energetic swirl of late Victorian entrepreneurship. Founded in the 1860s by Don José Carreras, a Spanish émigré with a flair for branding and a keen eye for the expanding London market, the company grew steadily from a modest tobacconist’s concern into a major manufacturer. By the early twentieth century Carreras had become synonymous with innovation: they were early adopters of mechanised production, pioneers in mass-market packaging, and adept at cultivating brand loyalty through the increasingly popular medium of cigarette cards.

The interwar years proved especially fruitful. Carreras embraced the public’s appetite for collectable series, issuing sets that ranged from film stars to military uniforms, from household hints to sporting heroes. Football, already the nation’s great Saturday ritual, was a natural subject. In 1934 the company released one of its most admired sporting issues: the Footballers series of seventy-five cards. Printed in crisp photogravure and carrying a clean, modern design, the set captured the leading professionals of the day at a moment when the English game was enjoying both stability and star power.

Among those featured was West Ham United’s stalwart centre half Jim Barrett, who appeared on card number seventeen. Barrett, a product of the East End and a favourite on the Boleyn Ground terraces, embodied the rugged dependability of the club’s pre-war sides. His inclusion in the Carreras set not only reflected his standing within the game but also offered supporters a tangible memento of one of West Ham’s most loyal servants. For many collectors, Barrett’s card remains one of the most evocative images in the series, a reminder of a player who represented the claret‑and‑blue with distinction throughout the 1920s and 1930s.

Carreras would continue issuing cigarette cards until the disruptions of the Second World War reshaped the industry, but their 1934 Footballers set endures as a snapshot of the sport in its confident, pre-war stride.
