1927-28 Football League First Division

Manager: Syd King

The goals were flowing as the season started with 21 goals in the first seven games, inside-forward Stan Earle scoring six times. By mid-October there had only been two defeats as the team travelled to play Everton. It was a complete shock as the Hammers were crushed 7–0, and they let in a further five in the next away game at Tottenham. Four goals were scored at home against Middlesbrough – but five were conceded.

In this period regular goalkeeper Ted Hufton had been injured, which left reserve keepers Baillie and Tate to endure a torrid time. On Christmas Eve Newcastle were beaten 5–2 at home, with Vivian Gibbins claiming a hat-trick, but two days later there came a 6–2 defeat at Sheffield United.

The FA Cup brought a 2–0 victory at Portsmouth but in the next round there was a 2–1 defeat at Huddersfield. The team were struggling in mid-table but results improved in March. Vic Watson scored a hat-trick in the 4–0 home win against Leicester City and followed this up with two more goals in a fine 5–1 victory at Cardiff City. The month ended with Jimmy Ruffell scoring twice in the 4–3 defeat of Blackburn Rovers, but there were no further wins in the remaining seven games of the campaign. It had been a disappointing season which ended with a seventeenth place finish.

Fine goalkeeping from Hufton and IcInroy. A well contested game turned in favour of the visitors in the 72nd minute when a bad error from Alfred Earl let in Marshall who made the score 2-3.

The Hammers were without Hufton and Watson, both injured. Loughlin scored within 5 minutes of his debut. The visitors were handicapped by an injury to Wadsworth. Loughlin had a chance to double his tally but scooped the ball over the bar from 6 yards. Yews put West Ham ahead from a twice taken penalty. Turner saved the first kick but the referee spotted that he had been standing well in front of his line

Henderson returned to West Ham's defence after an absence through injury that had kept him out of the first team since February 1925. In the match he was the best back on the field and the other three were good. It was a splendid match to watch. There was skill from both sides and it was sad that there had to be a loser.

The Hammers were alliocated just 150 (5/- shilling) seats. The return fare from Kings Cross to Huddersfield was 15/6. The train left London at 8:40 am and arrived in the Yorkshire town at 1pm, and Messrs Thomas Cook & Sons ran a train to Huddersfield that left East Ham at 8:25 am.

Gate receipts £1,999

The match was played in continuous rain before an attendance of 27,525. Huddersfield owed their victory over West Ham primarily to the fact that they set the pace for their opponents. They played their own stylish. well-balanced game from the start, and they were never in danger of being thrown off it, being easier winners than the score indicates. During the first half there were not above five movements by the United forwards seemed remotely likely to lead to a goal. For the remainder of the time the Town were attacking, and the fact that they scored only two goals must he attributed as much to Hufton’s excellent goal-keeping as to the poor finishing of the forwards.

The second half saw the Hammers playing a much stronger game in defence, whilst the attack did better. Ten minutes from the end Gibbins scored after Ruffell made the opening, and the visitors made a determined attempt to snatch an equaliser. They never really tested Mercer, however, but they succeeded in infusing a little Cup-tie fervour into a game that had lost some of its interest on account of the rather tame way in which West Ham had accepted their defeat. Huddersfield's two goals were scored within seven minutes of each other towards the end of the first half. Both from centres put across by Smith, Brown heading the first and Jackson diverting the second. Smith played a wonderful game for the home team in the first half, but then fell away. Kelly put in some distinguished work, and the wing halves. Redfern and Steele, were particularly effective. For the losing side Earl, Cox, and Collins were prominent, but none of the forwards, except Ruffell, was really dangerous.

Played in two inches of snow. Chandler was badly hurt and was carried off. He returned but was limping heavily and virtually useless. Watson's first goal was such a tame shot it never reached the net after crossing the line.
