This friendly match with Southend United was arranged in connection with the transfer of John Young from Southend United to West Ham on 29 April 1920. The Upton Park attendance was a disappointing 3,000.

Hammers fielding their reserve side who won 2-1 after trailing to a goal by the visitors centre-half Henderson at the break. Carter quickly equalised after the restart and the same player notched the winner with a cleaver shot passed Capper the visitor goalkeeper. Southend played the latter part of the game without Henderson who was injured and forced to leave the field.

In defeating Bristol City by 2 goals to 0 West Ham adapted themselves better to the ground conditions, their on swinging passes being much more suitable to the torrential nature of the ground than the Bristol short passing game.

In the first half the home team obtained both their goals the first by Bishop and the second from Bailey. In the second half Bristol City were more effective, their forwards copping well but the task of the home halves was made easier by the visitors persisting in the wing game

The Schoolboys of West Ham beat Plymouth Boys by 3-0 in the fifth round of the English Shield, on West Ham United's ground, before 18,000 spectators. A delightful goal was registered by Barton (centre-half), when he found the net with a shot from 20 yards range. This flaxen-haired boy, apart frm scoring the opening goal, astonished the onlookers with his cleaver defensive tactics.
The Plymouth defence broke down towards the end, when Adams, the right-back, mis-kicked, and Fraser easily scored, the goal being followed by another one obtained by Bishop (inside-left). Leitch, in goal for Plymouth, brought off many daring saves from Barrett and Grant, while Barton, the West Ham boy, was easily the best player on the field.

The return inter-city match between London Schoolboys and Newcastle Schoolboys was played in the presence of about 15,000 spectators at Upton Park. A fine contest resulted in victory for the London team by 5-2. The winners showed remarkable cleverness in all departments, but the feature of the game was the plucky display of the Newcastle boys, who despite being four clear goals in arrears at the interval played the second half unflinchingly against a heavier and clever side.
The Newcastle boys deserved all the sympathy of the crowd for their plucky display. London played with confidence from the start and quickly pressed the visitors' defence hard. The back were often put in difficulties by the sweeping movements of the London forwards, and at the end of seven minutes Sidey opened the scoring. This was followed by goals from Fraser, the West Ham Schoolboys' captain and Jones in the course of a few minutes. Before the interval Jones scored again for London.
The second half was more even. London missed three chances in the early stages, and Trotter the Newcastle centre-forward, missed a penalty-kick given for hands. He made amends, however, later by scoring with a capital long shot, and also obtaining the second for Newcastle with an equally fine effort; but sandwiched between these two was a brilliant run and goal by Lawrence the London outside-right.

On the ground of Wst Ham United West Ham Boys beat Ebbw Vale Boys in the semi-final of the English Schools Championship by 2 goals to 0. There were fully 20,000 spectators when the Mayor of West Ham Alderman D.J. Davis, kicked off.

Within two minutes Fraser scored for West Ham. Ebbw Vale were seriously handicapped by the absence for a long spell of Pattimnore, injured, and after two easy misses by Barrett, Fraser added a second goal. The Vale Boys pressed to the interval, but failed to beat the home defence.

In the second half Callaghan made great individual efforts to score, but spoilt his work by selfishness in sticking to the ball too long. Rogers, the centre-forward, hit the cross-bar. West Ham Boys forced six corners, while Rees made a sensational save. Hughes (West Ham) had only two shots to negotiate. Callaghan, of Ebbw Vale, who is a Welsh International, was the best boy on the field. He made several really brilliant runs, but, but was not well supported. On the winners' side, Fraser, Barrett, and Burton were the best.

A crowd of 30,600 people representing receipts of £ 775, saw the Liverpool Boys beat the West Ham Boys 3-2, on the West Ham United's ground in the final of the English Schools championship. This gate is easily an English record for schoolboy matches.

The Duke of York kicked and after the match presented the shield and medals to the winners and runners-up. He complimented both teams on their play and his congratulations were well deserved, for the standard of football was an excellent one.

The West Ham boys were rather unlucky to lose. They impressed as the cleverer team in the first half. Barrett scored an off side goal, and then Bishop headed a neat goal for the London side. Liverpool improved considerably in the second half. Holford equalised after six minutes Barrett put West Ham in front, again but Gyichrest and Dempsey got goals for Liverpool in the closing stages the Lancashire boys lasting out the game very well. For the winners. Ashfield and Macintosh at full-back were the best players. For West Lam, Sullivan, Barrett. and Murray did particularly well.

Various combinations of Liverpool goalscorers recorded in different newspapers.
