Famous Footballers
An unusual source of football cards came from Roche & Co. Ltd of London, who gave away a series of 50 Famous Footballers with their ‘Rising Sun’ Safety Paraffin matches. These smallish brown portrait cards were quite distinctive and featured three Hammers’ stalwarts Vic Watson, William Moore and George Kay. Moore had captained the side after the unfortunate Kay while on an end of season club tour to Spain suffered a haemorrhage. For three weeks first team trainer Charlie Paynter nursed his skipper back to health before they could return to England.
The set was also of interest for the Phillumeny collector. Phillumeny is the name given to collectors of matchbox related memorabilia including collecting matchbox labels, the hobby has been with us since pre Edwardian times. Inscribed on reverse "The Rising Sun Best Paraffin Matches"
