In the West Ham United practice match the Reserves did not beat the First Team, but though the juniors did not actually win they had far more of the goal-shooting than had the seniors and the result, a goalless draw, was almost entirely due to the brilliancy of Webster, in the First Team goal. For the past season or two the Hammers have not been over well served in goal, but the coming of Webster should recall memorise of the days of Monteith, Kingsley and Kitchen. Another player who "made good" was Fenwick, the tall centre half from Hull City, for he charmed the thousand supporters almost as much as Webster. Of the two backs, Cope and Speak, it is too early to speak, for it was evident they were not “all out" against their comrades. The old favourites came in for a welcome, and Ashton, Puddefoot, Leafe, Randall, and Whiteman all showed that they had not lost their keenness. One thing the game did demonstrate - that the Reserves were more dangerous marksmen than the Seniors, for the latter gave Hughes a lot of resting time.
After the pre-season practice matches West Ham United stated that the £143 receipts had been released for allocation to various charities, and that £60 of the total would go to the Prince of Wales Relief Fund (the War Fund). The players themselves had decided to send donations every week to the War Fund, and in their spare time they would be putting in a few hours rifle practice in the Boleyn Social Club grounds next door to the ground.

Artillery House, drawn from members of the 2nd East Anglian R.F.A. and G.R.A., at present quartered at Stratford, gave a better account of themselves against West Ham United at Upton Park than the scoring suggests. Four of the six goals against them came late in the game, when the light was by no means good; and it said much for their soundness and keenness that the end of the first half found them level with their professional opponents.
It goes without saying that Weft Ham were the cleverer side, but the East Anglians stuck well to their work, and if their forward play lacked subtleties it showed plenty of pace. Nor was combination by any means lacking. King, an old Romford player was a straight-going centre, who did not neglect his wings; but his shooting lacked sting, and he was inclined to be bustled off the ball somewhat easily. Bowyer, a long-limbed outside right, put in a good deal of dashing work, while Blake, at right half, another lanky player, with a distinct turn of speed, was a valuable adjunct of the attack.
Hecktord, late of the Leytonstone Club. could not be blamed for the size of the score against him. Actually he showed admirable form, and made a number of saves, but the backs were completely beaten often enough for shots of rare power to be sent in out of his reach. But while the backs were frequently outmanoeuvred, their kicking was strong. West Ham opened the scoring ten minutes after the kick-off, Price, who was laying well up the field, getting past Heckford with a cross shot.
It was not for want of chances that the home side did not score again before half-time, but clever midfield work was neutralised by erratic long shooting. The artillerymen had a good share of attacking, however, and it was with a very fast low shot that Bombardier Smith put them on level terms. Hilsdon scored after a tricky run early in the second half, and with the military team showing signs of tiring, further goals came at frequent intervals. Hilsdon, scored twice more, end other successful shots came from Appleby and Brandon. In the last minute of the game Blake obtained an easy goal for the Artillery. The match was played for the Prince of Wales's Fund. and the profits are expected to amount to nearly £15.
