About five hundred spectators were present at the West Ham United Ground when the much-discussed match between teams representing the Essex Referees' Association and the Society of Association Referees was duly brought off. The novelty of 22 referees being in the field appealed to the onlookers, a section of whom entered with great zest into the spirit of the contest, and kept matters lively with their advice to officials and players, some of the remarks being very humorous. The players, however, wore not imbued with, similar rollicking ideas. They treated the game very seriously, and strove with might and main for success. The energy displayed by some of them was exhilarating, and at times there were pretty, deft touches, proving that in the bygone the whistle-holders on view had been practical exponents of the game of no mean order. The spirit was willing, but several found ere the game was over that the flesh was weak, and during the next few days they will have drag about weary limbs. The Essex referees, facetiously dubbed country yokels by their noisy supporters in the stand, carried too many guns for their opponents, and in the first half they scored once through the agency of Hart, after a long run. J. H. Jones in goal was; in fine form for the S.0.A.R.. and on numerous occasions he kept his goal intact when its capture seemed inevitable. Essex had penalty kick given against them, which Crawley took, but Bolden effected smart save. In the second half Essex were often on the defence, but their opponents finished feebly, and were consequently unable to open their account. On the other hand, Essex were always dangerous when they broke away, and although Jones dealt with numerous shots in fine style he was thrice defeated by Shalders, the Essex Referees winning by 4 goals to nil.
