The opening practice match took place on Monday, the game was not one of the thrilling ones, but still there was plenty of life about it, more especially in the second half. Both team to be pretty evenly matched, and the selection committee, or whoever is responsible for the selection of the first team, will have no easy task in picking out certain individuals from the host of talent which was before them. Some will be have to be left out that is certain, for twenty two can hardly be made to go into eleven. The Blue which seemed to comprise last season's reserves, gave the Reds a good game, and their forward line was distinctly promising. However, honours of the match were equally divided, one goal being scored by each team.
Simmonds, in goal, who filled the place of Clark, proved that not only is he a good back, but that should occasion arise for a temporary substitute for Kitchen in any one match the directors will not have far to look. He saved some remarkably hot shots, and had a lot more to do in the saving of shots than Kitchen. It fell to Grassam to score the first goal, and his shot gave Kitchen no chance at all, but the lead was not held for any considerable time, Featherstone equalising with a grounder. During the first half Brown received a cut knee and his place was taken by Rayner, of Walthamstow, very creditably indeed.

Please Note:

This was a double header programme with the North West Ham Boys match against South West Ham Boys which preceded the Hospital match.

FOR CHARITY AT WEST HAM.
As a result of the festival on behalf of the West Ham Hospital on the West Ham United’s ground £52 10s. will be added to the Hospital Cup Competition Fund. The big match, West Ham United versus the Hospital Eleven, was fought out in the best possible spirit, and resulted, as such a game should, in a draw.
West Ham at once went down, and in the first minute Randall all but scored with a terrific shot. The the club's forwards got away, and from a free kick a few yards outside the penalty area Vasey easily beat Clark. West Ham now attacked strongly and Brown was unlucky in heading against the crossbar. The equaliser however, was not long deferred, fr following a prolonged attack on the amateurs' goal during which Mcnair made several fine saves, Lee scored with  ahard shot. Five minutes later Brown headed into the net and Shea going through on his own, put on a third point. The profeesionals thus led at half-time by three goals to one.
After crossing over the general run of the play took place in the visitors half, the superior condition and understanding of the West Ham players being strongly marked. Goals, however, were difficult to obtain, thanks to the energetic defence of McNair, Hammond and Milward. Once Brown hit the right post, and then from a breakaway Papineau went clean through the home defence and scored a clever goal. Several dangerous rushes by the West Ham forwards were repulsed, and at last the visitors forced a corner, and Church again brought matters level by heading past Clark. A hard game thus ended in a draw of three goals each.

The schoolboys’ match, was highly enjoyed by their classmates, who had been granted a half-holiday for the occasion. North beat the South by 5-0, solely because they were the heavier team. Denyer, who played on the left for the South, is a wonder, but oh! so greedy.
